For over two decades, Saguache County Sustainable Environment & Economic Development (ScSEED) has been a driving force in shaping the economic and social landscape in Saguache County. Born from a grassroots movement in the late 1990s, ScSEED has remained dedicated to fostering sustainable development while preserving the county’s rich natural and cultural heritage.
The Roots of ScSEED
ScSEED was founded in 1997 when local leaders and citizens gathered to explore compatible economic development. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by Saguache County—high unemployment, lack of infrastructure, and economic disparity—community members sought to create a sustainable path forward. The 1999 Strategic Plan laid the foundation, outlining key priorities such as supporting small businesses, preserving open space and agriculture, and working to ensure economic resilience while maintaining the county’s rural character. Today, that plan remains relevant and continues to guide the work of ScSEED.
Historical Accomplishments
Since its founding, ScSEED has played a vital role in shaping Saguache County’s development, sponsoring numerous community organizations and initiatives. Over the years, it has facilitated public meetings, conducted surveys, and gathered data to guide local decision-making. Economic development efforts included launching the Mountain Money currency program to strengthen local businesses. Infrastructure and environmental projects have ranged from the restoration of Kerber Creek to installing a weather station at the Saguache Airport.
In historic preservation and tourism, ScSEED has played a key role in developing the Historic Saguache Walking Tour and publishing the Saguache County Heritage Map. Educational and youth-focused initiatives include introducing a ranching curriculum for schools and fostering a vocational education partnership. Community beautification projects have supported downtown improvements in Saguache and Crestone, along with the establishment of parks such as David Martinez Park. Recreational and cultural contributions include constructing the Saguache Skatepark and hosting the Wild & Scenic Film Festival. Additionally, ScSEED has worked to strengthen connections with organizations across the San Luis Valley and beyond, fostering valuable partnerships to support its mission.

Current Initiatives
Today, under the leadership of Executive Director Ameille Warner and a dedicated volunteer board, ScSEED continues to expand its impact. The organization is actively engaged in economic development, infrastructure improvements, and community-building projects. Placer.AI Data Analysis is helping to provide insights into visitor trends, business potential, and economic development opportunities in the county. The Highway 285 Streetscaping project, in partnership with the town of Saguache, aims to improve the corridor’s visual appeal and pedestrian safety.
ScSEED is also committed to revitalizing vacant properties, transforming them into workforce housing and vibrant business opportunities. One new initiative being developed is a Builders’ Guild, a mentorship program to connect experienced contractors with aspiring tradespeople, addressing workforce shortages, and supporting revitalization efforts. Additionally, ScSEED is participating in the evolving regional solar development to ensure sustainable and community-aligned growth. Business Coffee Hours, now held twice a month, provide networking opportunities and forums for discussing economic and business challenges within the community.
